Bangladesh study highlights areas to strengthen school health

The findings were presented on July 2026 at a national sharing and dissemination meeting in Dhaka, organized by DSHE with support from UNESCO.

Around 120 representatives from education, health, youth and sports, women and children affairs, planning commission and other government institutions, as well as teachers, policymakers, curriculum experts, education managers, academics, civil-society organizations and development partners, joined the discussion.

Sardar Md. Keramat Ali, Additional Secretary (Planning) of the Secondary and Higher Education Division, emphasized that health and education are inseparable foundations of human development, dignity and well-being. He also highlighted the importance of an updated curriculum aligned with international standards.

“Students need to be healthy in terms of physical and mental health to learn, and teachers need a healthy learning environment to ensure quality learning,” said Dr Susan Vize, Head of Office and UNESCO Representative to Bangladesh.

Prof. Dr Khan Moinuddin Al Mahmud Sohel, Director General of DSHE, called for the areas requiring immediate attention to be identified and addressed through priority action.

The report recommends stronger coordination among the ministries responsible for education, health, youth and sports, women and children affairs and social welfare. It also calls for better teacher and first-aid training, referral links between schools and local health facilities, improved sanitation and nutrition, access to physical and socio-emotional health services, qualified physical-education teachers, regular physical activity and dedicated financing.
